Solution:-

1990 > 550 = 11/2% of 10,000

hence

sales is more than 10,000

giving

5.5S + 0.5(S -- 10,000)

=> 1990× 100 whence

S = [1990×100 + 0.5×10,000] / (5.5 + 0.5)

=> 34,000

The total sales in Rs= 34000

Answer:

The total sales made were Rs 34,000

Step-by-step explanation:

The salesman is allowed a 5 and 1/2% commission which is 5.5% on total sales he makes.

In addition, he is allowed a 1/2% bounce on sales above 10,000 Rs only.

In our case, we have the total earnings of the salesman and we are to look for his total sales.

Since his total sales is unknown, let's say the total sales = x

Since he earns 5.5% ( which is 5.5/100) on the sales he makes, then we are going to say,

(5.5/100 × X ) +...

We also know that he earns 1/2% of sales made above Rs10,000 . Since we said our total sales are X, we will subtract 10,000 from X then multiply the difference with 0.5% ;

(X - 10000) × 0.5/100

The addition of the (5.5/100 × X ) with [ ( X - 10000) × 0.5/100)] will give us the total earnings of the salesman;

(5.5/100 × X) + [(X- 10000) × (0.5/100)] = 1990

(5.5X/100) + (0.5/100 X - 50) = 1990

We take the like terms together

5.5X/100 + 0.5X/100 = 1990 + 50

6/100X = 2040

Which is 6X = 2040 × 100

6X = 204000

Divide both sides by 6 to get

X = 34,000.

Since X is what we substituted for our total sales, then our total sales is Rs 34,000.
