solution : let see density of the sample
density = mass of the sample/volume of the sample
= 0.04g/143ml
= (0.04/143) g/ml
= 0.000279 g/cm³ [ as 1 ml = 1 cm³ ]
here you see density of the sample is very low compare to liquid gasoline (0.7 g/cm³ , it is one of the lowest dense liquid ).
we know, only gas has lower density than liquid.
Therefore the sample must be a gas. i.e., option (2) a liquid, is correct.
