Given A sample of dry soil weighs 48 gm. The void ratio of the soil sample (if the volume of soil sample is 30 ml and the specific gravity of the solid is 2.77) will be

The weight of solid in the given mass to the weight of water is the void ratio

So volume of soil sample is 30 ml, weight of sample dry soil is 48 gm, specific gravity of the solid is 2.77

So void ratio = Vw / Vsp

                    =  48 / 2.77

                     = 17.32

Now e = V/Vs = 30 / 17.32

So the ratio will be 30 : 17.32
