A school awarded 38 medals in football, 15 in
basket ball and 20 in cricket. Suppose these medals
went to a total of 58 students and only three students
got medals in all three sports. If only 5 students got
medals in football and basketball, then the number

Let x get exactly 1 medal

and y get 2 medal

as stated 3 students get 3 medals.

therefore

x+ 2y +3 ×3. = 38 + 15 +20 =73

x +2y +9 = 73

x +2y = 73 -9

x +2y = 64

Also,

x + y + 3 =58 {total number of participants}

x+ y =58-3

x+y = 55

Now, using elimination method to solving this

x + 2y = 64

x + y = 55

y = 9

then

x + y =55

x + 9 =55

x =55-9

x =46

then

46 students get exactly 1 medal

9 students get 2 medals
