let the total mass in container initially be x

the mass remaining after scientist removed 39.1

=x-39.1

According to given condition

3x/10-23/4=39.1

3x/10-23/4=391/10

(3x-391)/10=23/4

3x-391=230/4

3x=230/4+391

3x=(230+1564)/4

3x=1794/4

x=149.5grams

please check the calculation
