average speed = total distance covered/ total time taken
=> 40+60/ 2+1
= 100/3
= 33.33 km/hr = average speed

Average speed = Total distance / Total time

First case,
Distance = 40 km
Speed = 20 km/h
Time = Distance / Speed
= 40 / 20
= 2 hours

Second case,
Distance = 60 km
Speed = 60 km/h
Distance = 60 / 60
= 1 hour

Total distance = 60 + 40 = 100 km
Total time = 2 + 1 = 3 hours

Therefore,
Average speed = 100 / 3
= 33.33 km/h (approximately)
