For the board to be completely level on the pivot point, the person or object must equal the same weight of the other side. However, if you place a heavier object on one side and place it closer to the pivot point, balance can be achieved. This is because the center of the pivot can hold more weight than the other sides.
For example, if a young girl were to sit on the end of a seesaw and a heavier man were to sit on the other side, the man would have to sit closer to the pivot point than the little girl.
