Plants store the food that they produced by photosynthesis in the stem and roots. So, when goat ate away all the leaves of the plant, the plant fulfilled its requirement by the food stored in stem and roots.

Plants can easily survive if there are no leaves for a few days.

The food stored in the stems and roots acts as a supplement and help them to fulfill the food requirement when the leaves are absent.

For the gaseous exchange it makes use of lenticels of stem.

hope it helps
