relative speed of ship be A=8m/s
motion of women in North direction B= 6m
and relative motion of women be C= ?
by Pythagoras theorem
A*A+B*B=C*C
hence relative motion of the women with relation to sea is 10m/s

Given:

A ship is steaming towards east with a speed of 8m/s . a women runs across the deck with a speed of 6m/s towards north .

To find:

What is the velocity of woman relative to sea?

Solution:

From given, we have,

A ship is steaming towards the east with a speed of 8m/s.

A woman runs across the deck with a speed of 6m/s towards the north .

The velocity of woman wrt to sea = velocity of woman wrt ship - velocity of ship wrt sea.

The velocity of woman wrt to sea = Vw - (-Vs)

The magnitude of the velocity of woman wrt to sea = √[Vw² + Vs²]

= √[6² + 8²]

= √[36 + 64]

= √100

= 10

∴ The velocity of woman relative to sea is 10 m/s
