A ship sails north east at 15 km/hr and to the passenger on board. The wind appears to blow from north with velocity of 15root2 km/hr. Find the true velocity of the wind.

Given,

The speed of the ship in km per hour\[ = 15\]

The speed of the wind in km per hour\[ = 15\sqrt 2 \]

Solution,

Therefore, the true velocity of the wind

\[\begin{array}{l} = 15\sqrt 2  - 15\\ = 15\left( {\sqrt 2  - 1} \right)\\ = 15 \times 0.414\\ = 6.21\end{array}\]

Hence, the true velocity of the wind is \[6.21\] km per hour.
