The complete question is,

A shopkeeper earns a profit of Rs. 1 by selling a pencil and a loss of 20 paisa by selling an

eraser.

(i) In a given day he had a loss of Rs. 10. On this day, he sold 35 pencils. How many

erasers were sold on this day.

(ii) Next day, he earn a profit of Rs. 25. On this day he sold 100 erasers. How many

pencils did he sell.

Given:

A shopkeeper earns a profit of Rs. 1 by selling a pencil and a loss of 20 paisa by selling an

eraser.

To find:

(i) In a given day he had a loss of Rs. 10. On this day, he sold 35 pencils. How many erasers were sold on this day?

(ii) Next day, he earns a profit of Rs. 25. On this day he sold 100 erasers. How many pencils did he sell?

Solution:

1 rupee = 100 paise

(i)

Let the number of eraser sold be x

Given total loss = Rs 10

⇒ 10 = loss by eraser - profit by pencil

10 = (0.10 × x) - (35 × 1)

10 = 0.10x -35

45 = 0.10x

x = 450

Therefore 450 erasers were sold that day

(ii)

Let the number of pencil be x

Given total profit = Rs 25

⇒ 25 = profit by pencil - loss by eraser

25 = (1 × x) - (100 × 0.10)

25 = x - 10

35 = x

Therefore 35 pencils were sold by shopkeeper.

(1) 50 erasers were sold on this day.

(2) 45 pencils were sold.

Step-by-step explanation:

We are given that a shopkeeper earns profits of Rs 1 by selling a pencil and a loss of 20 paise by selling an eraser.

(1) In a given day he had an loss of Rs. 10. On this day he sold 35 pencils.

As we know that 1 rupee = 100 paise

There is a loss of Rs 10 =  10 \times 100 = 1000 paise.

Loss by selling of one eraser = 20 paise

So, Number of erasers sold =  \frac{1000}{20}

                                              =  50 erasers.

Hence, 50 erasers were sold on this day.

(2) Next day, he earn a profit of Rs. 25. On this day he sold 100 erasers.

     Loss by selling of one eraser = 20 paise

     Total loss from selling of eraser = 20 \times 100 = 2000 paise = Rs 20

According to question, there is a profit of Rs 25, which means in order to get a profit of Rs 25, there must be a profit of Rs 45.

Since, it is given that there is a profit of Rs 1 by selling a pencil, which means 45 pencils must have been sold.

Therefore, 45 pencils he sell.
