A shopkeeper earns a profit of rupee 1 on selling one pen and suffers a loss of 30 paise on selling one pencil. In a particular month, he incurs a loss of rupees 5. In that month, he sold 40 pens. How many pencils did he sell in that period? pls help (answer needed with all steps)

Loss = 0.5/- with 1 pencil

Then,

In 1 month he has loss of 5/- and sells 40 pens

Therefore —> 40 pens = 40/- profit

So there should be 45/- loss to get 5/- loss

Let no. of pencils = x

Then,

0.5x = 45

x = 45/0.5

x = 90

Therefore 90 pencils are sold
