The total number of pens he had is 300.

Given:

  • The shopkeeper sold 60% of the pens he had
  • He has 120 pens left

To Find:

The total number of pens the shopkeeper had.

Solution:

Let the total number of pens be p.

pens sold = 60 % of p

Therefore, remaining pens = (100 - 60) % = 40%

The number of remaining pens = 120

40 % of p = 120

\frac{40}{100}  p = 120

40 p = 120 * 100

p = \frac{12000}{40}

p = 300

Hence the total number of pens the shopkeeper had is 300.
