Namdev (also called Nam Deo or Sant Namdev or Saint Namdev) was a prominent bhakti poet amongst the earliest of those who wrote in the Marathi language. Namdev was born in the year 1270 in the village of Naras-Bamani, located now in the Satara District of Maharashtra to a lower-caste tailor named Damashetti Relekar and his wife, Gonabi (Gunabai). Narsi Bamani, a village in Hingoli taluk of Hingoli district, is the birth place of Namdev. Also called a Varkari saint. It is 17 km away from Hingoli. This village has become now Narsi Namdev. His full name was Namdeo Relekar. Yadusheth, his ancestor in the seventh generation, was a devotee of Bhagawad-Dharma. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Pandharpur, where the prominent temple of Lord Vitthal (also called Vithoba) is located. Saint Namdev had spent the better part of his life, spanning eighty years in Pandharpur. His parents were devotees of Vithoba. The family observed the Varkari system of Pandharpur by going on pilgrimage twice a year on the first eleventh day of the Ashadh (June-July) and Kartik (October-November) months. He became a saint-poet of mediaeval India. He was a companion of Lord Krishna and not a servant of the Lord. Namdev is said to be an incarnation of Uddhava who was one of the closest friends of Lord Krishna and at the same time a foremost devotee of the Lord. The 24 chaptersin the eleventh skanda of Srimad Bhagavatam which constitute the Uddhava-gita is what the Lord spoke to Uddhava. It is one of the most authentic expositions next only to the Bhagavad-gita itself, of Hindu philosophy straight from the horse’s mouth. When Krishna was taking leave of Uddhava to leave his mortal coil, Uddhava refused to part with Him. But Krishna prevailed upon him to take things as they were and advised him to go to Badarikasrama for doing penance till the end of his life which he did.
