Akbar is considered great by historians, a title which is hard to get, but not very tough.
For historical rulers, the title "Great" is often used for those who were able to carve a huge kingdom, showed religious tolerance, secured the trade, effected sound administrative and military system, safety of general population, patronised arts and culture and showed great personal qualities among many others.
There was a tendency to accord the title of " great" to many historical rulers, but now historians are cautious before making any such claim to avoid any controversy.
Still " great" is often appended to his title. Let's inspect few of his achievements.
One can find many other rulers who embodied such virtues, even better than Akbar. But why Akbar was honoured such title, mainly because he was considered to be an embodiment of the idea of Hindu- Muslim unity during Medieval age. No other mainstream Muslim expansionist ruler can challenge him in this regard. It is also argued that he was not famous in his reign much as he is made now because of socio-political reasons.
