All of us have felt the necessity of a guru in our lives one time or the other. None of us are capable to do everything on our own. Someone who is more knowledgeable, intelligent and successful in life will definitely make a difference in our lives too.
‘Gu’ means Guhya or darkness and ‘Ru’ means remover or alleviator. He who removes our ignorance and makes our life happy, comfortable, enlightened and blessed is our guru or guide. Anybody and anything - from a friend, relative, teacher, boss, good book, a cd etc to religious n spiritual master can be our guru. Our personal Gods or almighty himself can become our guide if we sincerely wish and pray for.
In Mahabhagavatha, an Avadhuta speaks of his 24 types of gurus from whom he learns the essence n lessons of life. If we are egoless n open minded, lot of things can be learnt easily. You can be a jack of all n master of atleast one!
Sanatana dharma or Indian philosophy places the knowledge of the Parabrahman r the Supreme Lord at the highest level compared to all other types of knowledge. It is called paraa vidya. All others are aparaa vidyas meaning inferior r less useful.
Even to succeed in worldly life one needs a good guru, a guide, a counsellor or a subject expert. Hence, it goes without saying that for getting liberated from the shackles of birth n death - to attain supreme bliss r nirvana r emancipation from this world one should first find a suitable guru, fall at his/her lotus feet and surrender totally.
