Prakash and Mohamed were friends and lived in the little island of Kavaratti. They studied in the fourth grade and went to school together.
One day during school vacation, Prakash wanted to go to the beach with his friend Mohamed. His dad advised him strongly against going alone without the company of an elder. But as soon as his dad and mom had left for work, Prakash slipped out of their house and called out to Mohamed as he passed by their house. Together they ran to the nearby beach. The lagoon was calm and peaceful with just a few ripples on the surface. As they sat on the beach playing with sand, an idea came to their minds. Why not take one of the small boats, kept upturned on the beach and go out in the lagoon? Very soon, they managed to straighten out a small boat and push it in to the water, hopping inside. It drifted away from the beach and Prakash and Mohamed were lost in the beautiful underwater sights of fishes and corals. Suddenly, Prakash called out to Mohamed to come and look at a large fish and Mohamed rushed to Prakash’s side. The sudden shift in weight caused the boat to rock violently and the next moment, it turned over! Both children fell into the sea but managed to cling on to the boat which was now floating upside down. They cried and shouted for help. Fortunately, some people in the distance heard their cries and swam up to their boat and pulled them both ashore.
Soon their parents were called and it was an embarrassing moment for Prakash and Mohamed, who had clearly not followed their parent’s advice. It was clearly a case of ‘advice not taken’.
