a silver coin is dissolved in a solution of nitric acid. have the silver atoms been destroyed?

No, silver atome just change in Ag+

2Ag + 2HNO3 --> 2AgNO3 + H2 (g) 

It's a redox reaction where Ag(silver) become Ag+ (lost one electron to the powerful acid). The elctron lost goes to the H+ ion to give (for a very short time) atomic (elemental) hydrogen which rapidly combines to give hydrogen gas (H2).
