A simple barometer was first constructed by ​Evangelista Torricelli.

The very first simple mercury barometer was constucted by an Italian physisct Torricelli in the 17th century.

• Torricelli used mercury to measure atmospheric pressure. Torecelli was a pupil of famous scientist Gallieo Galleli.
• After many failed attempts by a lot of well known scientist, Torecelli was the first to observe that there was a balance between the atmaospheric pressure on the water surface outside the tube and the pressure on tyhe water inside due the water tube used.
• His theory had to face a lot of critcism and he approached a diffrent method to prove his theory with the help of mercury. Mercury Barometer's were used till 2007 to meausre the atmospheric pressure, which became out of use due to restrictions placed on mercury use for it being harmful.
• Barometers are mailny used by scientists for weather forecast.
