Given : discount in series of 40% and 20%

To Find :  A single equivalent discount

A) 49%

(B) 52%

(C) 53%

(D) None of these

Solution:

Let say Price before discount = P

40 % Discount = (40/100)P = 0.4P

price after one discount =  P - 0.4P = 0.6P

20 % discount = (20/100)0.6P = 0.12P

Price after total Discount = 0.6P - 0.12P

= 0.48P

Net Discount = P - 0.48P = 0.52P

single equivalent discount = (0.52P/P) * 100

= 52 %

TO DETERMINE

A single discount equivalent to a discount series of 40% and 20% is

EVALUATION

Let the initial price = 100P

First discount percentage = 40%

Discount Amount

\displaystyle \sf{  =100P \times  \frac{40}{100}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  =40P  }

After 40% discount the price is

= 100P - 40P

= 60P

Now the discount percentage = 20%

Discount Amount

\displaystyle \sf{  =60P \times  \frac{20}{100}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  =12P }

Total discount amount

= 40P + 12P

= 52P

So total discount percentage

\displaystyle \sf{   =  \frac{52P}{100P} \times 100\%   }

\displaystyle \sf{   = 52\%   }

FINAL ANSWER

A single discount equivalent to a discount series of 40% and 20% is 52%
