Answer:

The wavelength of light is 400 nm .

Explanation:

Given that :

  • Width of slit, d = 0.5 mm
  • Distance of screen from slit, D = 1m
  • Distance of second maximum from centre, x = 2 mm

Solution :

  • The phenomen of bending of light around the corner of a small aperture and spreading into the region of geometrical shadow is called diffraction of light.
  • Distance of n th secondary maxima from the centre of the screen is

x(n) = (2n + 1) \frac{Dλ}{2d}

  • For second maxima n = 2.

2 \times  {10}^{ - 3}  = (2 \times 2 + 1) \frac{λ}{2 \times 0.5 \times  {10}^{ - 3} } \\ 2 \times  {10}^{ - 3} =  \frac{5λ}{ {10}^{ - 3} }  \\ λ =  \frac{2}{5}  \times  {10}^{ - 6}  = 400nm

  • Hence, wavelength of light is 400 nm .
