A slab consists of two parallel layers of copper and brass of the same thickness and having thermal conductivities in the ratio 1 : 4. If the free face of brass is at 100°C and that of copper at 0°C, the temperature of interface is(a) 80°C(b) 20°C(c) 60°C(d) 40°C

Answer:

a) 80°C

Explanation:

Layers of the slab = 2 = copper and brass (Given)

Ratio of the thermal conductivity = 1:4 (Given)

Temperature of brass = 100°C (Given)

Temperature of copper = 0°C

θ  =  k1θ  +k2θ/ k1+k2

This is as - k1/k2 = 1/4

Thus, if K1 = k , then k2 = 4k

= θ  = k × 0 + 4k × 100 / 5k

= 80

Therefore, if the free face of brass is at 100°C and that of copper at 0°C, the temperature of interface is 80°C.
