Definition:

Void ratio of soil sample is the ratio of the volume of soil solids in the  given mass of soil.

The porosity of soil sample is the ratio of the volume of voids to the total  volume of the given mass of soil.

Given details:

Porosity of the soil sample is 40%. So, n = 0.4

Specific gravity of solids is 2.7

Required Formula:

Void ratio (e) = n/(1-n)

Solution:

e = 0.4 / (1-0.4)

e = 0.6667

Answer:

Void ratio (e) = 0.6667

Hope it helps. Thank You!
