A solid cube of edge 20cm is melted and recast into smaller and equal
cubes of 4cm. Find the number of smaller cubes obtained.

Solution :

Given

  • Side of bigger cube = 20cm
  • Side of Smaller cube = 4cm

Now , To find the number of Smaller cubes , we have to use the volume of each cube :

↝ Volume of bigger cube = (side)³

↝ Volume of bigger cube = (20)³

↝ Volume of bigger cube = 8000 cm³

↝ Volume of Smaller cube = (side)³

↝ Volume of Smaller cube = (4)³

↝ Volume of Smaller cube = 64cm³

Now,

we need to find the number of smaller cubes

  • Number of cubes = Volume of bigger cube / Volume of Smaller cube

↝ Number of cubes = 8000 / 64

↝ Number of cubes = 125

Hence , Number of Smaller cubes is 125
