Let molecular mass of element E is M and valency of it is x. then compound of chloride is ECl_x

we know, vapor density is half of molecular weight.

so, molecular weight = vapor density × 2

= 47.5 × 2 = 95 g/mol.

a/c to question, solid element forms gaseous chloride on reaction with Cl2 without change in volume.

i.e., E(s)+(x/2)Cl_2\rightarrow ECl_x

a/c to question, solid element forms gaseous chloride on reaction with Cl2

means, x/2 V = 1V => x = 2

molecular weight of E = 95 - 2 × atomic mass of Cl = 95 - 2 × 35.5 = 24g/mol

then, equivalent weight = molecular weight of E/valency

= 24/2 = 12

hence, equivalent weight of element is 12
