Methyl orange is a pH indicator used in titrations because of its clear and distinct colour change. It shows red colour in acidic and yellow colour in basic medium.

Electrolysis of brine or sodium chloride solution produces sodium hydroxide, NaOH which is a strong base. Using methyl orange as an indicator gives a yellow colour solution for NaOH.

Given:

pH 2 solution is taken in beakers. To it various indicators have been taken.

To find:

Change in indicators ?

Calculation:

  • A solution with pH = 2 means that: the solution is acidic in nature.

  • So, the changes in colour of the indicators (methyl orange and phenolphthalein) will correspond to an acidic environment.

  • In acidic environment, METHYL ORANGE will immediately become red in colour.

  • In acidic environment, phenolphthalein will remain colourless. However, it becomes pink in alkaline medium.
