A sonar device attached to a ship bands ultrasound wave in the sea these waves are replaced from the bottom of the sea. If the ultrasonic waves takes 4 sec to travel from the ship what is the depth of the sea

Here,

we will use the formula

Velocity = 2(distance/time)

2 is present in the RHS as the sound wave is traveling to the seabed and coming back, hence covering the total distance twice.

we know that

velocity of sound in seawater is 1531 m/s.

Hence we get

1531 = 2( \frac{d}{4} ) \\   =  > 1531 =  \frac{d}{2 }  \\  =  > 2 \times 1531 = d \\  =  > 3062 = d \\  =  > d = 3062

here d denotes the distance

Hence, the depth of the sea is 3062 metres or 3.062 kilometers

Hope this helps.
