Today, I had to make a speech for school captain. For all that were interested, here it is!

Good morning fellow students, teachers and parents in attendance,

Firstly, I’d like to welcome you all to this special assembly we have here today.

For the majority of you that don’t know me, my name’s Justin Smith and I’m running to become one of Fountain Gate Secondary College’s School Captains for 2012.

Over my schooling life, I’ve held many different leadership roles – both in primary and secondary school. This ranges from Vice House Captain in 2005 to Young Leader in 2008 and even to the Interschool Sport Baseball coach in 2010, where I lead them to zone finals. Although they may not seem like it, they’ve been some of the hardest tasks I’ve had, yet, I’ve found ways to overcome them and be successful.

Being a leader isn’t just about being an outspoken character that gets noticed, it’s about all the other little qualities. Words like hard working, dedicated, persistent and enthusiastic spring into mind, these are all extremely important in becoming a good leader. I believe I have all the qualities, plus more.

I am a trustworthy and honest student, who is well respected amongst all my teachers and peers. It’s these three qualities that are valued the most – all good leaders possess them. I am confident and will often set my mind on a goal – and commit myself to achieving it.
As Gandhi once said: “I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”

Having the opportunity to become one of the two School Captains of Fountain Gate Secondary College means a lot to me. Ever since I started here in year 7, I’ve watched these rolls being played and often dreamt that I would one day become involved in one of them. Today, I have the opportunity to grasp that dream, the same dream I’ve had for the last 6 years.

The role of School Captain is immensely important, not only for the school but for the wider community of Fountain Gate Secondary College. If elected School Captain, I will proudly represent the school, in everything I do. Wearing the logo on my shirt everyday gives me an immense amount of pride and satisfaction.

As School Captain, I will strive to guide every single one of you in this room to success, continuing to set a good example to you all.

My ability doesn’t just involve the individual, but the community as a whole. I wish to get amongst the faculty, parents and guests to build a strong foundation of leadership and student voice in 2012, and for the future.

2012 will be an important year for us at Fountain Gate Secondary College, Further consolidating our individuality. As a school captain, I will ensure the school continues to build our profile, as a separate school.

If elected School Captain, I will endeavor to do the school proud, in anything and everything I do.

Thank you all for listening, good luck to all other nominees. I hope you all have an amazing Tuesday.
