While solid objects such as a bench or a table has tightly-packed molecules, sponge has loosely-packed molecules. So when we compress it the air inside comes out and leads to the compression of the object.

A sponge is a compressible solid.it has small pores which make solid compressible.even though it is compressible,it is a solid as it has definite shape, volume.
