Given :

Length of the spring when it is kept in vertical position = 30 cm

Undeformed or natural  length of this spring = 40 cm

Stiffness or K of the spring = 10 N/cm

To Find :

What is the value of force in the spring ?

Solution :

We Know that in case of springs according to Hook's Law :

F = KΔx

Here , F is the force acting on the spring cause a deformation of Δx in the length of the spring .

So in this case since the natural length is 40 cm and length after deformation is 30 cm , so thee is compression in the spring .

So ,  Δx = 40 - 30

             = 10 cm

So , the force acting on this spring will be :

F = K \times 10 N

   = 10 \times 10 N

   =100 N

Hence , 100 N force is acting on the spring .
