A spy report about a suspected car reads as follows . "The car moved 2.00 km towards east , made a perpendicular left turn , ran for 500 m , made a perpendicular right turn , ran for 4.00 km and stopped". Find the displacement of the car.

Thanks for asking the question!

SOLUTION::

Please see figure to understand question nicely.

Before starting convert all distance in same unit like:
2 km
500 m = 0.5 km
4 km

In the figure,

AD vector = 2i + 0.5j + 4k

And by Pythagoras Theorem ,
AD = √(AE² + DE²) = 6.02 km

tanФ = (DE/AE) = 1/12
Ф = tan⁻¹(1/12)

So, the displacement of the car along the distance tan⁻1(1/12) with positive x-axis is 6.02 km.

Hope it helps!
