A square field of side 800m has two crossroads that cut at right angles through the centre of the field. Find the area of the field excluding the crossroads in hectares given that width of both the roads are 4m and they are parallel to the sides of the field.

given,

side of square field = 800m

Area = 6400 m²

area of path EFGH = EF × GH

Area of path IJKL = IJ × JK

Area of EFGH = 800×4 = 3200 m²

Area of IJKL = 800×4 = 3200m²

As the Area of PQRS have calculated double times we subtract the area of PQRS from the total area of path

Total area of path = (3200+3200) = 6400m²

Area of square PQRS = Side × side

=> 4×4 = 16m²

Actual area of path = (6400-16)m²

=> 6384m²

Area of field = (6400-6384) = 16 m²
