side of square=2cm
area =  {2}^{2}  = 4 {cm}^{2}

if side is doubled,
side = 2×2=4cm
area =  {4}^{2}  = 16 {cm}^{2}

the area will increase
 \frac{16 {cm}^{2} }{4 {cm}^{2} }
=4 times

now the side is 2 cm so when the sides are doubled it will become 4cm
as we know,
area = side*side
so, after the sides are doubled,
area = 4*4=16 sq cm
now, the original area was 4 sq cm but after doubling the sides it is 16 sq cm so, we can say that the area has increased by 4 times !
