Let the side of the square field be x.

The path on the two longer sides has an area of 2*(x+4)*2 or 4x + 16. The path on the two shorter sides has an area of 2*x*2 or 4x. The total area of the paths around the square field is thus

4x+16 +4x = 72, or

8x = 72–16 = 56, or

x = 7m.

The field is 7m x 7m or 49 sq m.

Check: Area of field including the path = (7+2)(7+2) = 11*11 = 121 sq m. If the area of the field is 49 sq m, then the area of the path = 121 - 49 = 72 sq m.
