☆ Question ☆
A steamer goes downstream and cover the distance between two ports in 4 hours while it cover the same distance upstream in 5 hours if the speed of the stream is 2 kilometre per hour find the speed of stream hour in still water.
☆ Solution ☆
☆ Given ☆
- A steamer goes downstream and cover the distance between two ports in 4 hours while it cover the same distance upstream in 5 hours if the speed of the stream is 2 kilometre per hour.
☆ To find ☆
- The speed of stream hour in still water.
☆ Step-by-Step-Explaination ☆
Let the speed of the steamer in still water be x km/h.
Then, the speed downstream = ( x + 2 ) km/h and
The speed upstream = ( x - 2 ) km/h
Given, distance covered in 4 hours downstream = distance covered in 5 hours upstream .
∴ 4 ( x + 2 ) = 6 ( x - 2 )
=> 4x + 8 = 6x - 12
=> 4x - 6x = ( - 12 ) - 8
[ Transposing 5x to LHS and 8 to RHS ]
=> - 2x = ( - 20 )
=> x = 10 or x = 10 km / hr.
