speed of stream =3kmph
speed in upstream=x-3
speed in downstream=x+3
time taken for upstream=5hrs
time taken for downstream=3hrs
so
3(x+3)=5(x-3)
3x+9=5x-15
3x-5x=-15-9
-2x=-24
x=12
so speed of steamer = 12kmph
speed of steamer upstream=x-3=9kmph
