a steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 4 hours while it cover the same distance upstream and 5 hours if the speed of the stream is 2 kilometre per hour find the speed of the stream and still water.

speed of streamer while going downwards= (x+2) km/hr.

distance covered downstream =speed *time

                                                    =(x+2) *4 km.

speed of streamer while going upstream= (x-2) km/hr.

distance covered upstream =(x-2) *5 km.


according to given condition;

(x+2) *4=(x-2) *5

4x+8= 5x-10

4x-5x=-10-8

-x=-18

x=18

∴speed of streamer in still water is 18 km/hr.
