A steamer going downstream in a river covers the distance between two towns in 20 hours. While

moving upstream , it covers the same distance in 25 hours. If the speed of the stream is 4km/h, find the

distance between the two towns? ( hint: speed upstream= speed in still water- speed of the stream )

Answer:

Let velocity of the streamer be V

s

Let distance between the 2 towns be d

Velocity of water = 4 km/h

∴, velocity of streamer downstream = $$V_s+4$

Velocity of the streamer upstream = V

s

−4

Velocity downstream=V

s

+4=

20

d

(1)

Velocity upstream=V

s

−4=

25

d

(2)

Subtracting (2) from (1), we get

8=

20

d

25

d

⇒8=

5

d

(

4

1

5

1

)

⇒40=

20

d

⇒d=800km

Hence, distance between the 2 towns = 800 km.
