Question :-

A steel ball sinks in water but floats on mercury. Why?

Required knowledge :-

Density = Mass/Volume

A substance (such as - iron, aluminium) which is denser than the liquid will sink, while a substance (such as wood, cotton) which is less dense than the liquid will float.

Solution :-

A steel ball floats on mercury whole sinks in water is because the density of mercury is more than that of water.

Therefore, the density of the steel ball is more than that of water but less than that of the mercury.
