the density will be more for the needle than that of the ship
ships area is more.... however there is a plimsoll line.... and the ship should not sink more than it

One thing about floating and sinking is it is determined by several factors which include density of material and shape. A steel needle has its surface area very less that is the reason it sinks.
Whereas the ship has hollow surface area that is the reason it floats.
