A stone is dropped into a well 45m deep, the sound of the splash is heard 3.13 sec after the stone is dropped.

first , find time taken to reach the stone into the well.

initial velocity of stone , u = 0 m/s

distance travelled by stone , h = 45m

using formula, S = ut + 1/2 at²

or, 45 = 0 + 1/2 × 10× t²

or, 90 = 10t²

or, t = 3sec

hence, time taken to reach 45 m above the well by sound = 3.13sec - 3sec

= 0.13sec

now, speed of sound = distance travelled by sound/time taken

= 45m/0.13sec

≈ 346 m/s

hence, speed of sound in air = 346 m/s
