Given ,

The velocity of stone which is thrown vertically is 4.9 m/s

We know that , the Newton's first equation of motion is given by

 \sf \large \fbox{v = u + at}

According to the question ,

v = u - gt

Here ,

v = 0

g = 9.8 m/s²

u = 4.9 m/s

Substitute the known values , we get

0 = 4.9 - 9.8(t)

t = (- 4.9)/(- 9.8)

t = 1/2

t = 0.5 sec

Downward flight time of stone is same as upward flight time

Hence , time taken to reach the ground is 0.5 + 0.5 = 1 sec
