What is the special bond between a pet and their owner? For years experts have been exploring the wonders of animals and their unique connection with humans. Scientists have found that in domesticated dogs there was a 6th chromosome that is similar to genes linked in humans called the “sweetness” gene and this is commonly called the eager to please trait. Our ancestors didn’t know what genes were but they did see a difference in personalities that some wolves showed over others. So, they bred them and eventually came to call them dogs. From our understanding, this is how pets came to be.
There is definitely something special about the connection between a pet and their owner. Pets can leave an everlasting bond on our hearts. When your companion passes it can be overwhelming and truly heartbreaking.
Animals showing companionship can be found throughout history dating back as far as the Stone Age. Two of the most popular types of pets are dogs and cats but it doesn’t stop there. The choices of pets have expanded over the years and the list is endless.
Pets have been proven to provide physical and emotional benefits to people, especially people with disabilities. Pet therapies have utilized and trained animals with their handlers to achieve physical, social, cognitive or emotional goals with patients. In the US alone, pets outnumber children four to one. That says a lot about how much society has changed about what animals mean to us. Here are some ways to help bond with your pets.
Ways to bond with your pets:
Pay attention to your pet
Spend quality time together
Communication is key
Animals pay attention to what you do more than what you say
Train your pet
Understand their body language
Remain calm
What is the Special Bond?
Originally, when I met Rusty I wanted to do a story about the importance of rescuing and what it means to save an innocent life from an unstable situation. Whether it’s trauma or abandonment, rescuing anyone from this situation creates a connection that will never be broken. The special bond is affection. The degree of contact between the two is what creates a strong affection for each other.
Rusty, a Golden Retriever, was rescued by his owner Becky through a Golden Retriever Rescue as a young adolescent. Becky was familiar with the breed knowing very well they are puppies at heart for life. She took one look at him and knew he was the one that was meant for her. She took him home and as we fast forward to today,13 years later, I can see that unique bond in their relationship as he begs for treats in her hands during our interview. (Check out the video below)
As Becky talks with me, she went through a time in her life that was stressful and he was there for her every step of the way. He helped her have the courage to move forward. I recently learned that Rusty passed away from his struggles with cancer. His soul will always be part of Becky’s heart. What she has learned from him will carry a meaning in her life and in her children’s lives to come. Truly, Rusty had a purpose to fill and I would say he did that very thing.
