Answer:
I read some of the stories here of people befriending crows, so a week ago, I started dropping a couple almonds on the sidewalk whenever I see neighborhood crows perched on telephone poles. I whistle twice before I drop food to alert their attention.
They never really seemed to react, though I noticed the almonds are always gone when I walk by later. I wasn't sure if squirrels were taking them.
Today, I bought some peanuts in shells. I didn't see any crows at all on my walk home, but as I neared my backyard, I decided to see if I could summon them by whistling.
One flew up from the alley and perched on the pole right next to my gate. I threw a peanut and he flew down and landed on the ground before I had even closed the gate behind me.
I heard him fly away, but I wasn't sure if he had grabbed it or not, so I reopened the gate to check to see if it was gone. It was. I checked the trees and telephone poles overhead for more crows, but didn't see any. But as I shut the gate again, I noticed there was another crow sitting right on my fence watching me intently. So I whistled again and dropped a peanut. I was barely past him before he flew down and snatched it. I stopped to watch him and he even hopped closer towards me trying to get a good grip on it before taking off.
Maaaan, people weren't kidding when they said that crows love peanuts with shells!
