Hi !!

Step-by-step explanation:

Let,

distance between the ports = y

By question,

upstream: downstream:

distance= y. distance= y.

time = 4 hrs. time = 3 hrs.

speed = d/t= y/4Km/hr. speed = d/t= y/3 Km/hr.

Therefore,

speed of stream= 1/2(speed of downstream- speed of upstream)

= 1/2(y/3 - y/4) ......(a)

As speed of stream given in the question is 2Km/hr, equate it to equation (a).

2 = 1/2(y/3-y/4)

take LCM for y/3 & y/4

2 = 1/2(4y/12 - 3y/12)

2 = 1/2(1y/12)

2 = 1y/24

bringing the denominator to the other side,

2×24=y

48=y

therefore,

The distance between the ports is 48Km.

Hope this helps you!!!
