A student added iodine to an unknown solution turning it into blue.
The unknown solution was starch.
It is because the iodine in the 15-ions form get stuck in the coils of beta amylose molecules which is a soluble starch.
It further forces the iodine atoms to form into linear arrangements in the central groove.
It gives the complex the blue color.
