DC meters are sensitive to direction of current. AC current involves change of direction every half cycle, and the pointer of DC meter is not able to stabilize at any position. It will just keep oscillating around zero position. It may burn out if current is beyond limit, but will not show any reading.

If you wish to take a useful reading from the meter, a full waye rectifier can be used to feed rectified current to meter. Meter is connected on DC side of rectifier.

An average current is then measured by meter, which can be converted to AC value by using form factor of 1.1.

Sometimes this method is used, and the gauge may be calibrated and marked to read the AC quantities directly.
