let the time taken to complete the exam in second half be x.
time taken to finish in first half= 3x/5

a/q    3x/5 + x= 48
         ⇒(3x+5x)/5 = 48
        ⇒ 8x= 48*5
         ⇒ x= 240/8
          ∴ x= 30
so time taken to complete the second half of the exam = 30 minutes

time taken to complete the first half of exam= 3/5 * 30
                                                                    = 3*6
                                                                    = 18 minutes
and so to confirm, total time taken =30+18= 48 minutes.
