If the 0 mark is not visible consider the mark on the scale which is visible (n) as the beginning. Measure using this mark (n) as your initial. Subtract n from the final mark to obtain the lenth of the pencil.
example:
initial mark (n) = 4cm
final mark = 18 cm
length of the pencil = Final mark - initial mark
= 18 - 4
= 14cm

Answer:
The student should measure the pencil from 1. And after he gets the result he should subtract 1 mark from the result
