Convex lens as concave lens forms diminished images while it forms both diminished and magnified images.
The candle will be kept at focus of the lens to obtain real, inverted and magnified image of object.
Let the distance of candle from lens be x (focal length).
Image distance from lens is 6-x.
Maginfication = 3 = Image distance / Object Distance = 6-x / x
3x = 6-x
x(focal length) = 6/4 = 1.5
Hope it helps
